The Lowcountry season is long, but it's not infinite. A few small moves make your outdoor space feel ready every time you step outside.
Layer your shade
A pergola alone is great. A pergola with retractable shade cloth, a few market umbrellas, or some thoughtful tree planting is better. Sun angles shift through the day — give yourself options.
Light it for night use
String lights, low-voltage path lighting, and a couple of well-placed downlights extend your evening hours by hours. The difference between an outdoor space you use until 8pm and one you use until 11pm is almost entirely lighting.
Make seating intentional
Outdoor furniture is too often pushed against the walls of a patio. Pull it into conversation arrangements. Two facing pairs of chairs work better than a long row.
Quick seasonal maintenance
Once a season: rinse cushions, check wood for any sealant touch-ups, clear gutters on covered structures, and tighten any hardware that's loosened up. Twenty minutes of care keeps everything looking new.
