Pavilions & Cabanas
Custom Pavilions & Cabanas in Charleston, SC
A pavilion is a freestanding covered structure that creates a true outdoor destination away from the home. Think poolside cabana, shaded lounge, outdoor dining space, or a full outdoor kitchen designed to bring the resort-style experience into your own backyard.
At Holy City Pergolas, every pavilion and cabana is designed around the way you want to live outside. Because they stand on their own, they are perfect for creating a separate gathering space near a pool, garden, patio, fire feature, or open yard area.
Pavilions can be designed in different roof styles, including A-frame, gable, hip roof, or lean-to designs, depending on the look of your home, the layout of your yard, and the overall feel you want to create.
Whether simple and open or more finished with fans, lighting, fireplaces, privacy walls, or a complete outdoor kitchen, your structure is built to feel intentional, inviting, and made for the Lowcountry lifestyle.

Pool pavilions and pool cabanas
Beside a pool, a freestanding covered structure changes how the whole backyard gets used. It gives swimmers shade to retreat to, gives everyone else a comfortable place to sit, and turns an afternoon by the water into somewhere you can spend a full day.
Poolside builds are often described as pool cabanas — typically with more privacy or partial enclosure on one or more sides — or as pool pavilions, which stay open on all sides for airflow and sightlines to the water. We build both, and the choice usually comes down to how exposed the spot is and whether you want a screened-off feel.
If you need enclosed space for changing, storage, or a bathroom rather than just cover, look at pool houses.
A-frame, gable, and hip roof designs
A-frame and steep gable roofs give you height and a dramatic vaulted ceiling inside the structure. They read as a statement piece in the yard and carry a stained tongue-and-groove ceiling beautifully.
Hip roofs slope on all four sides for a lower, more tailored profile that often sits more quietly against a home with a similar roofline.
Lean-to designs use a single slope, which works well when the structure needs to tuck against a fence line, a garage, or a tighter corner of the yard.
Backyard pavilions as an entertaining space
Away from the pool, a pavilion works as the anchor for the part of the yard you actually want people to use — a dining table under a solid roof, a lounge around a fireplace, or a covered spot for the grill that works in the rain.
Because a pavilion has a solid roof rather than an open frame, it holds up as a shelter in Lowcountry summer downpours and gives you full shade through the hottest hours. Pair it with an outdoor kitchen and it becomes a genuine second living space.
Pavilion, cabana, gazebo, pergola — what's the difference?
Pavilion — freestanding, solid roof, typically rectangular with an A-frame, gable, or hip design. Full shade and rain cover.
Cabana — usually a poolside structure, often with privacy or partial enclosure on one or more sides. In practice, many cabanas are pavilions finished for poolside use.
Gazebo — traditionally rounded or many-sided in footprint. Not technically the same as a pavilion, though the word is often used loosely for any standalone roofed backyard structure.
Pergola — an open-framed structure with rafters instead of a solid roof, for filtered shade and an airier feel. See Pergolas.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a pavilion and a cabana?+
Both are freestanding roofed structures. 'Cabana' usually describes one built beside a pool, often with some privacy or partial enclosure on one or more sides. Many of the cabanas we build are pavilions designed and finished specifically for poolside use.
Is a pavilion the same as a gazebo?+
No. A gazebo traditionally has a rounded or many-sided footprint, while a pavilion is typically rectangular with an A-frame, gable, or hip roof. People often use 'gazebo' loosely for any freestanding roofed backyard structure, so tell us what you're picturing and we'll confirm which build matches it.
Should I choose an A-frame, gable, or hip roof?+
An A-frame or steeper gable gives you dramatic height and an open, vaulted ceiling inside the structure. A hip roof slopes on all four sides for a lower, more tailored profile. The right choice depends on your home's roofline, the scale of the yard, and the feel you're after.
Can a pavilion include an outdoor kitchen or fireplace?+
Yes. Pavilions are frequently built around a full outdoor kitchen, a fireplace, fans, lighting, or privacy walls. Those elements are planned during design so the structure, clearances, and utility runs all work together.
Do I need a permit for a backyard pavilion?+
Requirements vary by municipality and HOA across Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and the surrounding Lowcountry, and depend on size, footings, and placement. We review what applies to your specific property during the design phase.
How close to the pool can a pavilion or cabana be built?+
Placement depends on your setbacks, deck layout, equipment locations, and local requirements. We work that out on site during pre-planning rather than assuming a standard distance.
Not sure whether you're picturing a pergola, pavilion, cabana, or pool house?
Most homeowners start with a feeling rather than a name for the structure. Here's how our builds compare so you can point at the one that matches what you have in mind — and we'll help you confirm it on a free pre-planning call.
